Pochta or Hail to the Mail, is truly one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen in a while. Created back in 1920’s Russia – a golden era for Soviet art & children’s books – the animation is based on a story by well-reknowned writer & poet, Samuil Marshak which has been recreated many times since but never as stunningly as this. The film concerns a letter written by a child to a famous writer, which continues to follow the him as he travels across the globe. I love the film’s colours, style, simplicity and of course, the it’s travel themes. It also strongly reminds me of Saul Bass’ closing titles to Eighty Days around the World, which are without doubt the cleverest & most wonderful animations I’ve ever seen accompanying a major film.
